For a year, he'd owned a Winston Cup auto racing team. Unlike many monostylous football coaches, Gibbs had major professional options. hours, when Gibbs would at last plop on his cot at Redskins Park, he couldn't sleep. Joe was suffering from migraine equivalent. But, last fall, stress suddenly began to lock up his body. Gibbs, a stereotypical workaholic coach, would often sleep in his office during the six-month NFL season. It was Washington's most stunning resignation since Richard Nixon. As a result, I took my family to the Colorado mountains in January to discuss our future.Īt 52, Gibbs quit the Redskins.
